1. Mining Rewards as Ordinary Income

In most jurisdictions (including the US, Canada, UK, and EU member states), cryptocurrency earned from mining is treated as ordinary taxable income at the fair market value (FMV) of the token on the exact day and time it is credited to your possession.

2. Capital Gains on Eventual Sale

When you subsequently sell or trade the mined crypto for fiat currency or other digital assets, a secondary taxable event occurs:

  • Cost Basis: Equal to the fair market value recognized when the coins were originally mined.
  • Capital Gain / Loss: The difference between your sale price and that cost basis.

3. The 4 Essential Reports to Download from HashForge

  1. Daily Payout Ledger (CSV): Records block height, UTC timestamp, coin amount, and fair market USD valuation at delivery.
  2. Monthly Expense Invoices: Official receipts for your plan subscriptions (often deductible as business operating expenses for registered corporate entities).
  3. Wallet Withdrawal History: On-chain transaction IDs (TXIDs) confirming transfer of your mining payouts to your self-custody wallet.
  4. Year-End Summary Report: Formatted for simple import into leading crypto tax software (CoinTracker, Koinly, TaxBit).
